How Much Does an Inflatable Kayak Cost?

Inflatable kayaks offer an easy to store alternative to traditional kayaks and provide a similar experience often for a significantly lower price. So, what should that price be? Much like traditional kayaks, the price for inflatable kayaks can vary greatly along with the quality.

Generally, you can expect an inflatable kayak to be priced anywhere from around $100 to over $4,000. However, around $700 to $2,000 is the most common price range and this level of quality will have the durability and features that most people need.  The quality of materials and construction along with the  size and features will determine where in this range a kayak’s price will fall.

Here we will look at what effects cost, benefits of an inflatable kayak, and what kind of kayak could be best for you.

Factors that Affect the Price of an Inflatable Kayak

Capacity: Kayaks are built for one to three occupants. A three person kayak will typically be more expensive as the vessel will be larger and heavier. Note, If you want a greater capacity than this, you should look at inflatable boats which can hold up to six passengers.

Features: There are several features that can raise the price of a kayak including its approved weight limit, additional storage space, and whether or not it is enclosed or of an open design.

The type of bottom the kayak has will also affect price. Inflatable bottoms are lighter and easier to carry but will also be cheaper as they can not withstand the same conditions as a hard bottomed kayak.

Perhaps the most important feature to affect cost is the warranty. While  cheap kayaks may only have a 90 day warranty, more expensive models can have a warranty that lasts multiple years.

Construction: Both the materials and the method used to construct an inflatable kayak are a significant part of what will affect the price. It is also one of the most important factors you should pay attention to when choosing a kayak.

Specifically, inflatable kayak seams can either be sealed with glue or by being welded closed. Welding offers a far superior hold and can actually extend the total life of the kayak. More puncture resistant material and welded seams will raise the price but often be of much greater value since the kayak will last longer. More importantly, a sturdier kayak will give you more options as to where the kayak can be used and provide a safer, more reliable kayaking experience.

Why Cheaper Might Not Be Better

The fairly wide range of prices for kayaks is largely due to the range of quality construction and materials used. While there are kayaks that can be had for as little as around $100, these are typically not much better than a pool float. Here are some factors to consider when deciding on a price range.

Value: These cheaper kayaks’ flimsiness and lack of durability do not make them suitable for most waterways and, instead, are better for use in pools and some calm lakes or ponds.  Though cheaper kayaks offer a low barrier of entry and could be a good option for very casual kayakers, they more often than not become a waste of money since they fall apart so quickly.

Versatility: Another factor to consider is that very cheap kayaks will not allow you to safely explore more areas. Kayaks towards the upper end of the price scale can even be used for white water rafting and for paddling on the ocean while cheaper models are best suited to pools.

Durability: Mid to high end kayaks can last for up to 10 years when cared for properly. Conversely, the cheapest kayaks will rarely last more than a few seasons of regular use. The cost and inconvenience of having to replace a cheap kayak multiple times will likely eclipse the cost of a high end model over the course of years.

Safety: Though most issues with a puncture or a broken seam on a kayak will likely be more inconvenient than dangerous, this is still an important factor to consider. Higher quality kayaks made of thicker, premium materials and welded seams will not shrivel in the face of a single rock the way a cheaper kayak might.  Avoiding these cheaper models greatly reduces the chances you will find yourself in a kayak taking on water and slowly sinking due to a puncture.

Are Inflatable Kayaks Worth It?

Kayaks of any kind can go a long way to enhancing your outdoor adventuring experience. So, what makes an inflatable kayak worth it? What makes it the right choice for you? Take these benefits into consideration when deciding on an inflatable kayak.

Convenience: When it comes to convenience, an inflatable kayak wins over a traditional vessel each time. Instead of having to store your kayak at a dock or a large indoor space, you can deflate your kayak and stow it easily in a garage or trunk of your car.
  1. Cost: Along with initial cost typically being lower than that of a traditional kayak, you will also save money on storage, maintenance, repair, and other key areas that make owning a traditional kayak expensive.
  2. Easy Maintenance: While kayaks of any kind are typically less difficult to maintain compared to a boat, they are also easier than traditional kayaks. Generally, the most important factor of maintenance is to simply make sure you put your kayak away when it is dry and free of dirt.  It should also not be stored in extreme temperatures. However, that is really the main maintenance to consider.
